I just finished Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and couldn't help but realized how famished and decrepit Link was designed in this game. Out of leisure, I took some time to re-design him as he appears in-game. I kept the 32x64 bit ratio in addition to 3 colors plus one bit for transparency, as was for the NES games. This .gif is just a screen cap with both designs put together. The two green pixels on each boot were drawn that way for a little trick used in two-step pixel art animation. It's so that we can't really tell which leg comes out front during a walk cycle so it works, besides never coloring the rear leg with darker values (not that you could due to the color limit per asset).

Gonna start doing some pixel art stuff. First limited colors and whatnot like SNES, just to appreciate the art form and how things were created with such limits, then go up and up. I'm noting that SNES games used 15 bit high color palettes, so characters were limited to 15 distinct colors plus a bit dedicated to transparency. Should be fun.

late update! well i've been learning how to model and texture in autodesk maya. at home i spend some time learning autodesk mudbox too. so here's a low poly character model i did for my maya 1 class with texture, also just a personal head study: maya + mudbox, among some portfolio template pieces.

oh, i'm also storyboarding for games this semester. been working on a boss fight sequence, rough stages. will definitely post up a board sequence this semester to share with you. :o)

One So Young

A few summers ago I worked as a concept artist on a collaborative student project called "One So Young." The visual style of the project is flat and graphic with hints of patterns here and there. My job was to develop story beats, indicating the progression of some key story parts with the support of layouts. Since it's a film, always remember, "The eyes have to go to the focal point immediately, and the lines of direction must have some story of their own, being indicated with subtlety and not with vulgarity."

Here's work from my visual development for games class with Christopher Schenck. An illustration, a layout, thumbnail and some character model packet. Game takes place in 1960s London with sci-fi twist so I added 60's toy robot villain.
I worked on a short story called "The Drunkard." Here are some layouts and thumbnails.This is my first work ever done for the drawing for film class. So, first attempt at set dress and layout meant to evoke a mood, not just a diner layout. Story used was "The Erlking."Concept drawing for an illustration in my digital imaging class. Graphite.

Here's work done for "Chariot of the Sun God." A shape script done to define the shape language of the design process, followed by some graphic thumbnails (I like different approaches) and two clay models of the main characters.And two figure drawings I did in Lisa's class for CFD2.

Lost my digital copies of some creature design and storyboarding work. Ugh, scanning that sounds so fun...

Illustrator Assets

I drew some icons/assets (I'm not sure what the difference is) and designed them in Adobe Illustrator for a real cheesy flash game that I've conceeeeeeeeeeiiiived. Won't say much about it yet.

We've got some cleaver, vegetable cutters, a sashimi slicer, a grater, a bamboo mat, a steamed-food bowl, a rice paddle, a rice cooker and a salad dish. Tried to keep the icon background simple and neutral to help the icons themselves pop out. So yeah, this is a test to see what people think.

Castle set sketches

Here are some pencil sketches I did based on the castle silhouettes from a while ago, in "pre-InDesign" printing format. There's 1 ortho in there too. Playing around with shapes bit. Trying to keep it look like a castle and not a rocket ship, station, or mall like I've seen in other places. I really think some of these would look great if they'd be modeled into a game. Gonna try more orthos.

Clean Up Part 1

I took some time to edit some work into pre "InDesign" format for printing. Some stuff is cleaned up, and other stuff is weeded out. Some older posts were deleted since I'm, well, trying to "clean up" the blog for presentation. Feel free to drop a comment.

These are a few Photoshop paintings done for my main character. He's more of an "avatar" character so I chose to not lean towards a specific emotion with him, hoping that allows a larger number of players to create their "own" as they play.

Here's how it started. Simple silhouette shapes done in marker, ivory black gouache and pencil.

Then I wondered what the face would look like under a head piece or helmet. What kind of helmet with that body's silhouette shape.

Then a few roughs developed from some of the silhouettes I liked.

Now come some edits and additions to the weapon designs. Here are some swords and shields. Some are done from scratch in Photoshop, kept simple without much detail really. Doing these was fuckin' cool.

These are some graphic designs and shot explorations for a valley set in the game.

Another Alien

Here's another alien creature I did. Um, based on a frog, or maybe a toad. More like a frog I think because it wasn't as fat and didn't have warts. Plus it was actually bright yellow/orange.

I started out with some small sketch, scanned it in and blew it up. I experimented with values. Kept things at values of 7, 5, and 3 with the addition of black and white. In the end less blending was done, so not as much use of adjacent values as the other alien. This one's more loose with me playing around. Felt happy with the personality behind the drawing at least.

Here's the palette I used if it can help you out.

Cadmium Orange with Mandarin Orange and Cadmium Yellow Pale as its neighbors opposed by Spectrum Violet and Pthalo Blue.

Random Alien

Here's an alien design I made today. Well I drew it last night, and painted it today. Besides just showing you the design I want to share the color palette I used with it. Alizarin Crimsom as the primary color with Cadmium Red and Magenta as its neighbors. Gunmetal grays made by mixing neutral grays with alizarin crimson and cadmium red. Here, beneath the sketch is the palette file. I find this approach useful for my designs. After a while you should find nailing the right value is a lot easier.

Figure Drawings and Pre-project Sketches

Here's a quick and short update for the blog. I'm posting two figure drawings I did about a year ago at the Academy of Art in Chuck Pyle's class. 10 mins and 8 mins. Didn't have SLR camera so I scanned these in, section by section and then tried to align everything in PS. lol

Ummm, I think to a certain point drawing a believable person from the imagination is more difficult than drawing one from life, unless you're creating something you've already done before or something that's a bit on the generic side of things. You have to understand anatomy, personality, character, everything to make it just as believable. One thing's for sure. Kids are way harder to draw than these.

Here are three drawings I did before I got cracking on the video game pitchbook project. A sword called The Shattered Dream, flatlands castle with a matterhorn right next to it and braided rivers, and a swamp concept.

Building Sketch

I'm tossing in a building sketch I did last November during break while working as a work-study scholar at the AAU. Temperatures were a bit nippy but the day was sunny. Anyway, I'm posting this because I really enjoyed drawing it. I'm always drawing people from life or sketching characters and sets, but rarely drawing buildings from life, and I think it's super important to do so.
